WEESI Essay Competition for Girls in STEM Nigeria
The WEESI National Essay Competition, targeted at Girls in Senior Secondary offering STEM in Nigeria, is organized as part of Women in Energy and Economic Sustainability’s initiative as we celebrate the “International Day of The Girl Child” which aims to inspire Girls in Secondary school offering STEM to learn more about the current and future trends, innovations, and impacts of renewable energy, and how they can contribute to this field as potential students, professionals, or leaders.
Selection Criteria and Eligibility
- Must be a Girl in Senior Secondary offering STEM subjects
- Must submit a passport photograph
- Must submit a scanned copy of a means of identification (birth certificate, National ID, or passport)
How to Apply
- Applicants must upload a scanned copy of their original birth certificates or international passport data page.
- Applicants must upload a handwritten essay (not more than 750 words Min. 1000 words Max)

The essay competition is open to all girls in grades 10-12 who are interested in STEM subjects. The topic of the essay is “How Women and Girls Can Actively Participate in The Clean Energy Sector as Change Agents”. The participants will have to write an original and creative essay of no more than 1000 words, and submit it online by October 8th, 2023. The essays will be evaluated by a panel of experts from academia and industry, and the winners will be announced by October 15th, 2023.
The top three winners will receive cash prizes of One hundred thousand naira (Ꜻ100,000), Fifty thousand naira (Ꜻ50,000), and Thirty thousand naira (Ꜻ25,000) respectively, as well as certificates, medals and gift prizes.
The winners will also have the opportunity to present their essays at a special award ceremony that we would host in October 26, 2023. The award ceremony will be attended by prominent STEM professionals, educators, media, and parents.
