We (Women in Energy and Economic Sustainability initiative) thought about the best way to celebrate women on this day and this forgotten class of people came to fore.
The hardship of seeking for cooking fuel (firewood)
I wept tears seeing the joy on their faces.
Nigeria has the third highest number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Africa. In 2020, it counted 2.7 million internally displaced people.
Clean energy for cooking in displacement settings should be prioritised on the humanitarian agenda
investment to support efforts towards transitioning refugees and other displaced to cleaner cooking fuels and technologies.
Fleeing homes due to conflict, persecution or disasters leaves these populations facing acute challenges in accessing energy.
Over 80% of refugees and IDPs living in camps rely on biomass for cooking — this includes firewood, charcoal, and animal dung.
Not only does this have negative health implications, but it also means thousands of hectares of forests vanish each year to support the cooking needs of the displaced and host communities alike.
The opportunities for making a difference are there to be seized.”
We empowered families with A Charcoal stove and charcoal briquettes.
We also seek support from well meaning individuals and organizations to help transit these women from cooking with firewood to cleaner fuels.
